Convert images to WebP online - without uploading them
This WebP converter turns PNG, JPG, GIF and BMP images into WebP entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 canvas API. Your photos are never uploaded to a server - which makes it safe for screenshots, client work and private images, and means conversion is instant with no file-size limits imposed by an upload form. Drop in multiple files, tune the quality slider, and download each converted image with a size comparison shown next to it.
Why convert to WebP?
WebP is Google's modern image format, supported by every current browser. Compared to older formats it delivers 25–34% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent visual quality, and dramatically smaller files than PNG for photographic content - while still supporting transparency (alpha channel) like PNG. Smaller images mean faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals (especially LCP) and improved SEO rankings, which is why PageSpeed Insights explicitly recommends "serving images in next-gen formats".
Choosing the right quality
- 90–100 - near-lossless; use for hero images and photography portfolios.
- 75–85 - the sweet spot for most web images; visually indistinguishable at a fraction of the size.
- 50–70 - thumbnails, backgrounds and previews where small artifacts are acceptable.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebP support transparency?
Yes - alpha transparency converts cleanly from PNG, usually at a much smaller file size.
Is WebP supported everywhere?
All modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) support WebP. For very old browsers, serve a fallback with the <picture> element.
Why is my WebP sometimes larger than the original?
Already heavily-compressed JPEGs or tiny images can occasionally re-encode larger. The size badge on each result shows exactly what you saved, so you can keep the original when conversion doesn't pay off.
